May I send you a gift copy of my favorite devotional book, worth a moment as you begin each morning with Bible study and prayer? It’s by George MacDonald, the Scottish writer and preacher whom C.S. Lewis called “my master.”

The book is Diary of an Old Soul, little seven-line poems dated for all 365 days in the year. Here’s one of my favorites…

“Things do go wrong. I know grief, pain, and fear.
I see them lord it sore and wide around.”
From her fair twilight answers Truth, star-crowned:
“Things wrong are needful where wrong things abound.
Things go not wrong; but Pain, with dog and spear,
False faith from human hearts will hunt and hound.
The earth shall quake ‘neath them that trust the solid ground.”
